Foundation Row - Double Crochet
Working a foundation row instead of working into a chain can be a little bit tricky to start with, however, it is a technique well worth taking the time to practice as it gives you a much neater edge to your work and a more elastic starting row.
How to work a Foundation Double Crochet Row
Beginning with a slip knot on the hook, ch2.
Insert the hook in the 2nd ch from the hook. *Yarn over and pull through the loop, yarn over and pull through the first loop on your hook (next chain made, place marker until you are used to recognising this stitch). Yarn over and pull through two loops (first fdc made). Insert hook into the chain made in the previous step (see marker) and repeat from * until you have the number of fdc you require.
